Scientists have long wondered about the neurochemical mechanism that makes you and them sleepy after eating. We finally have some clearance. We all know that to make your food useable by your body, your pancreas secrets insulin as a response to elevated glucose levels (glucose is basically sugar that you eat. (bread, carbs, alcohol and sugar are basically sugar that you eat.)) We all know that the insulin makes your liver, muscles, and fat cells suck up this glucose and store it as glycogen. What scientists didn’t know for the longest time is, “Why the heck does this process make me want to take a siesta?!”

Turns out, the question was wrong.

It’s not the process of metabolization that makes your brain sleepy. It’s just plain glucose. Denis Burdakov of the University of Manchester, UK was among the first to demonstrate how glucose makes your brain sluggish. But it’s not your entire brain. It’s mainly the orexin neurons in your hippothalamus. And even the slightest amount of sugar slows them down. Basically, sweets and carbs make you dumb.

Basically, Sugar and Carbs Makes You Dumb

This is why Diabetics often die on freeways driving at 75mph. They take a bite of their candy bar or sip of their sweetened coffee and their insulin response was not able to inhibit the rushing of sugar to their brain. Narcolepsy ensues and entire car loads of people have been involved in often fatal accidents.

The Solution: Lean and Rare Red Meat.

Thanks to high protien diet evangelists and fitness trainers, it’s common knowledge that high protien diets burn fat. This metabolic process is called ketosis. Fat and sugars are needed to digest high protien foods. If your red meat loaded with iron is lean, your body sucks back out all the fat and sugar it’s stored in your liver, fat cells, and muscles to digest your food.

Beautiful side effect is that even the sugars in your brain get sucked down. This is what leaves you alert, sharp, and creatively empowered.
